The Alliance for Fair Sugar Policy has welcomed the latest US Farm Bill that has been put forward by Chairman Thompson, which has set out America’s forward policy on key agricultural issues, writes Neill Barston.
According to documentation surrounding the legislation, it has been devised to assist farmers in managing risk, through providing assistance following overall declines in commodity prices.
It also seeks to re-frame existing commodity, marketing loan, sugar, dairy, and disaster programs, with the aim of providing certainty in unpredictable markets – with the sugar market experiencing particular volatility, with prices in fact experiencing notable highs that have placed pressure on a number of segments in the US, including the confectionery industry.
Commenting on the latest bill, Executive Director of the Alliance for Fair Sugar Policy, Grant Colvin, released the following statement. “The Alliance for Fair Sugar Policy commends Chairman Thompson for introducing a farm bill that benefits our nation’s farmers, manufacturers, and consumers. This measure includes targeted updates to the U.S. sugar program that will support the production of high-quality American sugar, bolster our food manufacturing supply chain, and help meaningfully bring down food costs for hardworking families. The Alliance strongly supports the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024, and we urge Congress to seize on this effort by coming together to pass a farm bill that strengthens America’s farm and food economy.”
The Alliance for Fair Sugar Policy (AFSP) is a broad-based coalition advocating to modernise the US sugar program established by Congress more than 80 years ago. Formed by a sizeable group of small, family-owned businesses and manufacturers, retailers, food and beverage companies, trade associations, environmental advocates, taxpayer watchdog organisations, responsible government advocates, think tanks, and other organisations, the group’s goal is to help level the playing field for American manufacturers and provide relief to family budgets by establishing a fairer, simpler US sugar program. .
